The General Assembly’s Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) opened today the second part of its resumed substantive session, what its Chairperson called the “final lap” in its annual marathon to take action on vital issues, such as funding United Nations peacekeeping operations and improving the Organization’s financial situation.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has announced today the appointment of Ivan Šimonovic as Assistant Secretary-General to head the New York Office of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has announced today the appointment of Sigrid Kaag of the Netherlands as Assistant Secretary-General and Assistant Administrator and Director of the Partnerships Bureau of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Ms. Kaag will replace Bruce Jenks, who has retired from service after a long and distinguished career with UNDP.

The urgent need to fulfil commitments to preserve the earth’s resources while building a better life for all was underlined today by officials and representatives of Member States and organizations, as the eighteenth session of the Commission on Sustainable Development opened at Headquarters this morning.

While many States had abolished nuclear weapons and reduced their arsenals, the global non-proliferation regime had been asleep for far too long, and it was now time to deliver on the deep global aspiration to build a safer world, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told world leaders as the month-long 2010 Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty opened at Headquarters today.

Pursuant to the decision taken at its twenty-third and twenty-fourth sessions and on the basis of General Assembly resolution 64/71 of 4 December 2009, the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf held its twenty-fifth session at United Nations Headquarters from 15 March to 23 April 2010.

The Security Council Al-Qaida and Taliban Sanctions Committee approved the deletion (de-listing) of the three entries specified below from its Consolidated List. The Committee approved these de-listings following its review of the names, as called for in paragraph 25 of Security Council resolution 1822 (2008).
