United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, following approval by the General Assembly, has appointed Michelle Bachelet of Chile the next United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. She will succeed Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein of Jordan, to whom the Secretary-General is grateful for his commitment and dedicated service to the United Nations.
The Secretary-General, following consultations with the chairs of regional groups of Member States, today informed the General Assembly of his intention to appoint Michelle Bachelet of Chile as the next United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Indigenous peoples continue to face discrimination, marginalization, violence and other infringements upon their basic rights, and these challenges are even greater when they migrate outside their traditional territories to urban areas or across international borders.
