Guinea-Bissau’s fragile post-election period requires strong, sustained support from all partners to prevent any backsliding of hard-won gains along the path to a peaceful transition of power, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General told the Security Council today.

Kenya is experiencing its worst desert locust infestation in 70 years, with swarm activity and breeding also occurring in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania. Left unchecked and with additional rains, it could grow 500-fold by June, with devastating impacts.
On 27 November 2019, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 2048 (2012) concerning Guinea‑Bissau held informal consultations to receive a briefing from the Chair on his most recent trip to Bissau (28‑30 October 2019) and discuss the way forward.
Expressing deep concern over social and political unrest in Guinea-Bissau, the Security Council, in a presidential statement (document S/PRST/2019/13) today, called on all actors in the country to preserve stability and to respect directives of the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Syria launched the Syrian-led, Syrian-owned inclusive Constitutional Committee in Geneva today, bringing together for the first time Government and opposition nominees, with women making up 30 per cent of the 150 participants, following a nearly nine-year-long conflict.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced today the appointment of Mamadou Diallo of Guinea as his new Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Guinea-Bissau (UNIOGBIS). Mr. Diallo will also serve as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Guinea-Bissau.
On 11 September 2019, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 2048 (2012) concerning Guinea-Bissau held informal consultations to consider the Secretary-General’s report on progress made with regards to stabilization and restoration of constitutional order in Guinea-Bissau (S/2019/696), submitted pursuant paragraph 28 of resolution 2458 (2018).
As Guinea-Bissau prepares for presidential elections in November, the international community must increase support for that country’s Government as it faces a multitude of challenges along the road to stability, senior United Nations officials told the Security Council today.
