The special session of the General Assembly -- "Women 2000, Gender Equality, Development and Peace for the Twenty-first Century" -- continued its review of the implementation of the Platform for Action adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing, 1995) this morning, hearing from 16 speakers.
It was a sad and sobering reality that women continued to be deprived of basic and fundamental rights because of measures imposed in certain countries, the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly was told this afternoon.
Eighteen Additional Speakers Address Efforts to Implement Platform for Action Adopted at 1995 Beijing Women's Conference
The twenty-third special session of the General Assembly, meeting to review implementation of the Platform for Action adopted at the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, heard from an additional 17 high-level speakers this morning.
As the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly continued its general debate this afternoon, a number of speakers called on the international community to recognize the fundamental right of women to enjoy equality in decision-making and power roles.
