Today is International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.  According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), this observance is intended to inscribe the tragedy of the slave trade in the memory of all peoples.

The European Union is investing in cooperation with the United Nations system as never before, the bloc’s senior-most diplomat told the Security Council today, detailing its involvement in conflict resolution, reconciliation and support for global priorities as diverse as climate change and disarmament.

Preventing and resolving conflicts is the top priority for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), its Chairperson-in-Office told the Security Council today, as he outlined actions to decrease tensions in Ukraine, Transnistria, Georgia and Nagorno-Karabakh.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat; the President of the European Commission, Jean‑Claude Juncker; and the Secretary‑General of the United Nations, António Guterres, met on 23 September 2018 at United Nations Headquarters in New York in the margins of the United Nations General Assembly.  They were accompanied by senior officials from the three organizations, including Vice‑President/High Representative Federica Mogherini; Commissioner for Peace and Security Smail Chergui; Commissioner for Political Affairs Minata Samate Cessouma; and United Nations Deputy Secretary‑General Amina J. Mohammed.  They discussed the ongoing cooperation between the three organizations and ways to better coordinate efforts in addressing global challenges.  They concurred that peace, security and stability are paramount not only to ensure decent living conditions for all citizens, but also to attract investments necessary for sustainable and inclusive growth.

The United Nations Secretary-General, the President of the European Commission and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice President of the European Commission, met in New York for their annual meeting in the margins of the seventy-third session of the United Nations General Assembly.SG

From 4 to 7 September 2018, in cooperation with the United Nations Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1540 (2004) and its Group of Experts, the Russian Federation hosted a training course in Rostov‑on‑Don for 1540 national Points of Contact of the Member States of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).  The course was supported by OSCE and the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs.
