The Economic and Social Council convened two interactive discussions today with speakers underscoring the need to more effectively support poorer countries in reaching development objectives, as it concluded the first five days of its High‑Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.

Following are UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed’s remarks at the high-level opening of the senior-level meeting of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation, in New York today:

The High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development today examined the contributions of science, technology and innovation in pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals, including ways in which Governments, the United Nations, the private sector, scientists, academia and civil society can work together to harness that power.

The High-Level Forum on Sustainable Development, entering the third day of its 2019 session, focused on the essential role of major groups and other stakeholders in implementing and monitoring the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with speakers emphasizing the regional dimension of their contribution.

Global partnerships are essential to helping the world’s most vulnerable countries eradicate poverty and address climate change, among other global challenges, delegates said today, as the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development held a thematic review focused on the specific needs of such States.

Four years after their adoption, progress on many of the Sustainable Development Goals remains slow amid rising inequality, the impacts of climate change and the world’s most vulnerable people suffering the most, the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development heard today as it began its fourth annual session.
