The First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) today approved its work programme for the seventy-ninth session and set out guidelines for its completion within the allotted time frame.
The First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) elected Maritza Chan Valverde (Costa Rica) Chair on 6 June.
The international community reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the multilateral treaty framework by undertaking a total of 32 actions at the annual treaty event which ended today, on the sidelines of the seventy-ninth United Nations General Assembly high-level week.

Development and threats of use of nuclear weapons are reaching a high point that must be reversed for the good of future generations, speakers said today during the General Assembly’s annual high-level commemoration of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
On 24 and 25 September, States from East and Southern Africa will meet in Gaborone, Botswana, alongside United Nations entities, international, regional and non-governmental organizations, to discuss the implementation of the Global Framework for Through-life Conventional Ammunition Management.
Any transfer of weapons and ammunition must comply with the applicable international legal framework, the United Nations disarmament chief told the Security Council today, as delegates warned against such arms fuelling the Russian Federation’s war on Ukraine.

Insufficient information provided by Syria regarding potentially undeclared chemical-weapons activities resulted in the opening of two new outstanding issues with Syria’s declaration under the Chemical Weapons Convention, a senior United Nations official told the Security Council today, noting that 19 of the now 26 such matters remain unresolved.
