During the month of October, the Security Council had done significant work to find consensus views on thematic issues at the same time that it addressed multiple crisis situations worldwide, the Permanent Representative of Argentina, President of the body, said in a monthly wrap-up meeting.

The United Nations and its partners continued to deliver life-saving assistance to millions of people in Syria, but much more must be done by the parties to the conflict to ensure rapid, unhindered access to the hardest-to-reach areas, a senior United Nations relief official told the Security Council today. 

Presidential elections in Côte d’Ivoire next year would be a “critical” moment to assess progress in the security situation, as the West African nation continued to recover from its 2011 political crisis, the Chair of the United Nations body overseeing the sanctions regime told the Security Council today.

Escalating tensions in East Jerusalem must be diffused without delay, but they could not be separated from the wider unresolved conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, the United Nations top political official told the Security Council this afternoon.

On 28 October 2014, the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999) and 1989 (2011) concerning Al-Qaida and associated individuals and entities removed the name below from the Al-Qaida Sanctions List after concluding its consideration of the de-listing requests for this name submitted through the Office of the Ombudsperson established pursuant to Security Council resolution 1904 (2009), and after considering the Comprehensive Report of the Ombudsperson on this de-listing request.

The Security Council today urged States, other parties to conflicts and the United Nations system to step up measures to protect and empower displaced women and girls and those facing threats of violent extremism, ahead of a day-long debate on women, peace and security.

In light of continued massacres committed by armed groups in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Secretary-General's Special Representative for the country this morning requested the Security Council to endorse and promote a more proactive stance by peacekeepers for protection of civilians.

A top United Nations political official warned the Security Council this morning that peace arrangements in eastern Ukraine were progressing far too slowly to end the violence and tensions there, and called on all actors to work more urgently toward durable peace.
