19980106 NEW YORK, 6 January (Department of Political Affairs) -- On 6 January, the President of the Security Council, Alain Dejammet (France), convened meetings of the Council's Sanctions Committees, which are composed of all members of the Council, to elect their respective bureaux for 1998.

SECURITY COUNCIL EXTENDS CYPRUS MISSION UNTIL 30 JUNE 1998

The Security Council this afternoon extended the mandate of the United Nations Peace-keeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), until 30 June 1998, and called upon the military authorities on both sides to refrain from any action, particularly in the vicinity of the buffer zone, which would exacerbate tensions.
