Security Council: Meetings Coverage
International, regional and subregional organizations must create partnerships that enable the international community to respond more quickly and effectively to violent conflict, the Security Council heard today, as it unanimously adopted a resolution on the importance of regional cooperation for international peace and security.
The Security Council today, reiterating its concern about the fragile security situation in the north of Mali, called for full respect of the ceasefire agreement of 23 May, while welcoming adoption of a road map committing the Government and armed groups of the Ouagadougou accord to hold formal peace talks.
Although a ceasefire was critical in ending the escalating violence, if the root causes of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict were not addressed, the problem would never be solved, but merely delayed for yet another time, the Secretary-General told the Security Council today during an open debate on the Middle East.
