Security Council: Meetings Coverage

Emphasizing that improved arms and ammunition management in Somalia was a fundamental component of greater peace and stability for Somalia and the region, the Security Council today urged that country’s federal Government to show tangible progress complying with the terms of the partial suspension of the arms embargo.

Condemning the recent outbreak of violence in the northern Malian town of Kidal, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) stressed to the Security Council that all actions must be taken to prevent that country from spiralling back into violence.

Taking up the situation in the Middle East, the Security Council today heard the first report on the work of its 2140 Committee on Yemen, established in February to support a peaceful, orderly and inclusive political transition in that country.

Calling the transformation of the stand-alone United Nations political presence in Burundi into a country team a “historic moment”, the Organization’s senior official there said today that the transition was well under way.

Despite the Libyan people’s strong determination to consolidate their freedom and build a modern democratic State, their country continued to face serious security challenges and a deep political crisis, the International Criminal Court’s top prosecutor told the Security Council today.

Calling on both sides to honour last week's ceasefire, the Secretary-General today told the Security Council that South Sudan was at a critical juncture and must take immediate steps to prevent an even worse humanitarian disaster.
