SECRETARY-GENERAL ‘STRONGLY CONDEMNS’ COUP D’ÉTAT IN SAO TOME AND PRINCIPE


The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:


The Secretary-General strongly condemns the coup d’état in Sao Tome and Principe and calls for the immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional order.  He also calls for the prompt release of government officials detained during the coup.

ANSWER TO PALESTINIAN PROBLEM LIES IN PERFORMANCE OF STEPS REQUIRED

Following is the message by Secretary-General Kofi Annan to the United Nations Seminar on Assistance to the Palestinian People in Geneva today, delivered by Peter Hansen, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA):

Secretary-General Kofi Annan left Switzerland in the evening of Monday, 7 July, and arrived in Maputo, Mozambique at midday on Tuesday, where he was due to attend the African Union Summit and hold meetings in the margins with a number of African leaders.
