SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS WILLIAM LACY SWING AS NEW SPECIAL


REPRESENTATIVE FOR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO


In a letter dated 16 May 2003, addressed to the President of the Security Council, the Secretary-General informed Council members of his intention to appoint William Lacy Swing of the United States to succeed Amos Namanga Ngongi as his Special Representative for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

SECRETARY-GENERAL CONDEMNS BOMB ATTACKS IN CASABLANCA


The following statement was issued on 17 May by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:


The Secretary-General utterly condemns yesterday's bomb attacks in Casablanca in which it appears that at least 40 people were killed and more than 60 were injured.  He sends his heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Morocco and to the families of all the dead and injured.
