SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS NEW UN SPECIAL ENVOY TO HORN

OF AFRICA AS HUMANITARIAN CRISIS DEEPENS


In response to the severe drought which has devastated large parts of both Ethiopia and Eritrea, Secretary-General Kofi Annan has announced the appointment of former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari as his Special Envoy for the Humanitarian Crisis in the Horn of Africa.

SECRETARY-GENERAL TO ATTEND ‘QUARTET’ MEETING IN AMMAN, JORDAN, 22 JUNE


The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:


The Secretary-General will participate in a meeting of Quartet Principals in Amman, Jordan, on 22 June.  The meeting follows the recent Aqaba Summit at which both Israel and the Palestinians agreed to begin implementing the Quartet’s Road Map.

The Secretary-General travelled to Washington, D.C. in the morning of Wednesday, 11 June, where he met with United States Secretary of State Colin Powell for a private working lunch, at which they discussed the Middle East and Iraq, operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia and Myanmar.
