SECRETARY-GENERAL strongly appeals for immediate release of Hostages in iraq


The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:


The Secretary-General is very concerned about the recent trend of hostage-taking in Iraq.  In the latest incident, Mr. Kim Sun-Il, interpreter from the Republic of Korea for a trade company, was taken hostage on 17 June 2004.

Secretary-General calls on all engaged in conflict to lay down arms


during olympic games, in remarks to headquarters ceremony

Secretary-General appoints jan pronk special representative for sudan


The Secretary-General has decided to appoint Jan Pronk as his Special Representative for the Sudan and head of the peace support operation that may be authorized following a Comprehensive Peace Agreement between the Government of the Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army.  The appointment is effective 18 June 2004.

Secretary-General Kofi Annan, accompanied by his wife, Nane, arrived in São Paulo from New York on Saturday morning, 12 June, for a four-day visit to open the eleventh session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, address a Special Ministerial Meeting of the Group of 77 and hold a number of bilateral meetings, including one with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
