The global economic growth that propelled many economies during the 1990’s did not promote sustainable development, or the kind of development that encompasses economic growth, social development, and environmental protection, according to a new report issued by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today.

This has been an extraordinary year -- an extraordinary year for the United Nations, for New York, for the United States and for much of the world.

On 10 December 2001, in Oslo, the United Nations and its Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in its Centenary year for their work towards trying to create a better organized and more peaceful world.

OF UNITED NATIONS PEACEKEEPING FORCE IN CYPRUS


Secretary-General Kofi Annan announced today the appointment of Major-General Jin Ha Hwang of the Republic of Korea as Force Commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) to succeed Major-General Victory Rana who relinquishes his post on 15 December 2001.
