SECRETARY-GENERAL DEPLORES VIOLENCE BY PALESTINIAN GROUPS,

SAYS ROAD MAP IS BEST PATH TO JUST, LASTING PEACE


The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:


The Secretary-General deplores the violence by Palestinian groups over the weekend.  Such violence is especially untimely following the Aqaba Summit, where the parties made a commitment to implementing the Quartet’s Road Map.

SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS JAN EGELAND OF NORWAY NEW

UNDER-SECRETARY-GENERAL FOR HUMANITARIAN AFFAIRS


The Secretary-General today announced the appointment of Jan Egeland of Norway as the new Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Humanitarian Relief Coordinator, succeeding Kenzo Oshima of Japan.

SHEIKHA HESSA OF QATAR APPOINTED NEW SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR FOR DISABILITY


Secretary-General Kofi Annan has appointed Sheikha Hessa bint Khalifa bin Ahmed al-Thani of Qatar as the Special Rapporteur on Disability of the United Nations Commission for Social Development for the period 2003 to 2005.
