IN STATEMENT TO SECURITY COUNCIL, SECRETARY-GENERAL VOICES CONCERNS

OVER EXTENDING UN PEACEKEEPERS’ IMMUNITY FROM ICC ACTION

Following is the text of a statement, as delivered today, by Secretary-General Kofi Annan to the Security Council:

The Secretary-General travelled to Washington, D.C. in the morning of Wednesday, 11 June, where he met with United States Secretary of State Colin Powell for a private working lunch, at which they discussed the Middle East and Iraq, operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia and Myanmar.

The Secretary-General strongly condemns ongoing armed attempts to overthrow the constitutional Government of President Ould Taya in Mauritania.  He is deeply concerned over reports of widespread violence, injuries suffered by the civilian population and looting.
