Acting under the provisions set out in Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, the Security Council this evening decided that all States shall prohibit the direct or indirect import of rough diamonds from Sierra Leone.
GENEVA, 4 July (OCHA) -- Against the background of a promising peace process in the Republic of the Congo (Brazzaville), an international meeting will be convened in Geneva on 6 July to call for immediate support to the transition process and to the restoration of security and stability in the country.
To achieve a successful transition to East Timorese independence, it would be useful for all parties concerned to set a date for elections and independence, the representative of Portugal said this afternoon as the Special Committee on Decolonization heard petitioners on the question of East Timor.
The Special Committee on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples took action on three draft resolutions this morning as it held the fifth meeting of its resumed annual session.
