PRESIDENT OF GENERAL ASSEMBLY VISITS SINGAPORE, EAST TIMOR, INDONESIA


Harri Holkeri (Finland), President of the General Assembly, made a week-long visit to the South-East Asian region from 10 to 17 January 2001, visiting Singapore, East-Timor and Indonesia.  Mr. Holkeri visited the region at the invitation of the Singaporean and Indonesian Governments and the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET).

SECURITY COUNCIL EXTENDS DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS


OF INTERNATIONAL TRIBUNAL JUDGES


The Security Council this afternoon decided to send a letter to the Secretary-General informing him of its decision to extend the deadline for nominations of judges of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia until 31 January.

MORE REQUESTS FOR ECOSOC STANDING CONSIDERED BY COMMITTEE ON NGOS


Continuing consideration of new applications for consultative status, the Committee on Non-governmental Organizations this morning recommended the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) special consultative status to two non-governmental organizations (NGOs).  It deferred action on two further applications.
