The Security Council this afternoon extended the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE), at unchanged troop and military observer levels, until 15 March 2002.

HOST COUNTRY IN MOURNING, BUT WITH ITS SPIRIT INTACT,

SECRETARY-GENERAL TELLS UNITED NATIONS STAFF


“Our host city is deeply wounded.  Our host country is in mourning, but its magnificent spirit is not broken”, Secretary-General Kofi Annan told United Nations staff this morning at a special meeting to pay tribute to the memory of victims of recent terrorist violence in the United States.

The President:  Before the interview, I would like to say a few words.


Mere words cannot express the outrage at the terrorist acts yesterday.  I condemn in the strongest possible terms those heinous acts of terrorism.  I pray for those who lost their lives, and offer my deepest condolences to the families of the innocent victims.

This afternoon, the fifty-sixth regular session of the General Assembly, among other things, elected its 21 Vice-Presidents.  The Assembly was also informed about the election of its Main Committees’ Chairpersons.

STATES PARTIES TO OTTAWA CONVENTION MAINTAIN DATES OF MANAGUA MEETING


The Government of Nicaragua, in consultation with the States Parties to the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personal Mines and on Their Destruction, has decided to maintain the dates of the Third Meeting of States Parties to the Ottawa Convention in Managua, from 18 to 21 September.
