SECRETARY-GENERAL DEEPLY SADDENED AT DEATHS


CAUSED BY HEAVY RAINS, FLOODS IN ALGERIA


The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:


The Secretary-General is deeply saddened by the high number of deaths and the destruction caused by heavy rains and floods that have affected over 4,000 families in the Algiers area.  He extends his condolences to the affected families.

MAJOR-GENERAL MIGUEL ANGEL MORENO APPOINTED FORCE COMMANDER

IN UNITED NATIONS IRAQ-KUWAIT OBSERVATION MISSION


Secretary-General Kofi Annan announced today the appointment of Major-General Miguel Angel Moreno of Argentina as Force Commander of the United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission (UNIKOM) with effect from 1 December 2001.
