USAID-sponsored Exhibit on Role of Women in Afghan Society opens today


An exhibit co-sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI), entitled “Out of the Shadows:  The Role of Women in Afghan Society”, opens today and will be on display in the South Gallery of the General Assembly Visitors’ Lobby in New York until 1 December.

UNITED NATIONS ASSESSES URANIUM MINE IN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO


GENEVA/NAIROBI/NEW YORK, 9 November (OCHA) -- A United Nations assessment at the Shinkolobwe Uranium Mine in the Democratic Republic of the Congo found high risks of mine collapse and potential chronic exposure to ionising radiation, and concluded that the mine must remain closed.  The assessment followed an earlier mine collapse in July 2004 that killed eight people.
