DRINKING WATER BASIC TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, HUMAN DIGNITY


Following is the text of General Assembly President Jean Ping’s message for World Water Day, 22 March 2005:


Millions of people around the world die and still suffer because the water they use for their daily needs is unsafe.

NAIROBI/AICHI, 18 March (UNEP) -- Images of deer, scavenging on a rubbish tip, the housing of the rich set against the slums of the poor and Buddhist monks solemnly draping cloth round a tree trunk have scooped the top prizes in the latest United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) International Photographic Competition on the Environment.
