Following are UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s remarks at the opening of the 2013 session of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People in New York on 5 February:

On 5 February 2013, the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999) and 1989 (2011) approved the addition of the entry specified below to its Al-Qaida Sanctions List of individuals and entities subject to the assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo set out in paragraph 1 of Security Council resolution 2083 (2012) adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations.

Giving the poorest and most vulnerable the voice and tools needed to lift themselves out of poverty is key to bolstering efforts towards and beyond the achievement of global development goals, according to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s latest report on promoting people’s empowerment, the priority theme of the Commission on Social Development’s fifty-first session when it meets from 6 to 15 February at United Nations Headquarters.
