New Permanent Representative of Gambia Presents Credentials

David Daroll Tommy, the new Permanent Representative of Gambia to the United Nations, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today.

Beginning in 2008 until his retirement from the United Nations in early 2012, Mr. Tommy was Regional Director for Africa with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

From 2007 to 2008, he was Director and Representative to the United Nations and other organizations at UNIDO’s New York Office.  He held various other senior positions in that agency, including Director of the West Africa Regional Office in Abuja between 2003 and 2007; Chief of the Field Coordination Unit from 2001 to 2003; and Head of the Regional Office for Eastern Africa and country representative to Ethiopia.

Mr. Tommy also served as representative at the UNIDO country office in Accra, Ghana, and Country Director in Lagos, Nigeria, from 1991 to 1993; and Evaluation Officer in the Office of the Director-General at UNIDO Headquarters in Vienna between 1989 and 1992.

Prior to joining the United Nations, he was Chief of the Organization of Africa Unity’ Industrial Technology Section from 1981 to 1985, and Assistant Director of the Gambia’s Department of Water Resources between 1975 and 1980.

Mr. Tommy holds Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.
