Security Council members welcomed today the European Union’s work to help realize United Nations peace and security goals in a wide range of situations around the world, following a briefing by the regional organization’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Surveying a few of those situations, Catherine Ashton emphasized that security, development and democracy, good governance and respect for human rights were all interlinked.

The Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations today recommended six entities for consultative status with the Economic and Social Council and postponed consideration of 25 applications in the penultimate day of its 2011 regular session, which heard extensive debate over the appropriate rights and procedures required to pose questions to groups seeking standing in the 19-member body.

The Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations today recommended 13 entities for consultative status with the Economic and Social Council, postponed consideration of six applications and took note of 210 quadrennial reports, or “briefs” submitted by NGOs every four years outlining their activities in support of the Council and, more broadly, the United Nations.

Overcoming nagging problems with its innovative but often-frustrating “Paperless Computer System”, the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations today, after reverting to traditional printed documentation, was able to recommend to the Economic and Social Council seven civil society groups for consultative status, while it postponed consideration of nine groups pending receipt of answers to questions posed.

Environmental experts and world leaders called today for the sustainable management of forests in the interest of human development as the United Nations Forum on Forests began its High-level Ministerial Segment by launching the International Year of Forests, 2011, which was followed by discussions on people-centred forestry and financing for forest communities.

The Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations today recommended eight organizations for special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council and postponed consideration of 19 applications. In other action, the Committee recommended that one non-governmental organization be reclassified as having special consultative status and that three organizations be reclassified as having general consultative status.
