Concluding Regular Session, Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations Recommends More than 200 Applicants for Status with Economic and Social Council

The Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations today concluded its regular session with the adoption of its report, in which it recommended that the Economic and Social Council grant consultative status to 225 applicants across regions and missions of the 439 applicants it considered during its session.

Security Council Adopts Resolution 2136 (2014), Renewing Arms Embargo, Related Measures Imposed on Democratic Republic of Congo

The Security Council today renewed until 1 February 2015 the arms embargo and related sanctions imposed on the Democratic Republic of the Congo, also requesting the Secretary-General to extend the mandate of the Group of Experts monitoring the implementation of those measures.

Security Council Adopts Resolution 2135 (2014), Extending Mandate of United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus until 31 July

The Security Council extended the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) until 31 July 2014 today, noting that the progress made so far had not yet resulted in a comprehensive and durable settlement between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides.

The Economic and Social Council this afternoon unanimously adopted its programme of work for 2014, as orally revised. It elected a member of its Bureau and appointed a member of the Ad Hoc Advisory Group on Haiti.

The Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations today deferred action on 10 applications for special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council, while recommending an upgrade to general consultative status for an existing one — International Eurasia Press Fund based in Azerbaijan — thereby allowing it to speak during meetings and propose agenda items.

Security Council Grants Year-long Mandate Extension for United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Central African Republic

The Security Council extended the mandate of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in the Central African Republic (BINUCA) for one year today, deciding also to expand sanctions imposed on individuals to include a travel ban and an assets freeze, and authorizing the deployment of a European Union intervention force in the country.
