Responsibilities to Bureau, Appoints Member of Haiti Advisory Group

The Economic and Social Council this afternoon unanimously adopted its programme of work for 2014, as orally revised.  It elected a member of its Bureau and appointed a member of the Ad Hoc Advisory Group on Haiti.

Details of the 2014 work programme, set forth in document E/2014/L.1, were as follows:  special high-level meeting of the Economic and Social Council with the World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Trade Organization (WTO), and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), scheduled for 14 to 15 April; two-partnership forum, scheduled for 9 to 10 April; and a meeting to consider international cooperation in tax matters, scheduled for 5 June.

In addition, the high-level political forum would include five non-ministerial days scheduled for 30 June to 3 July, with evening meetings on Monday, 30 June, and Tuesday, 1 July, and a three-day ministerial forum from 7 to 9 July.

The Economic and Social Council decided that its operational activities segment, scheduled for 24 to 26 February, would focus on “The changing landscape of development cooperation:  What does it mean for the United Nations system?”, and its integration segment, scheduled for 27 to 29 May, would focus on “sustainable urbanization”.

Economic and Social Council President Martin Sajdik (Austria) informed the Council of the Bureau’s agreement to put him in charge of the high-level segment and the high-level political forum on sustainable development for 2014, plus the programme of work of the Council from July 2014 to July 2015.  The following Vice Presidents would be charged with the following responsibilities during the 2014 session:  Carlos Enrique Garcia Gonzalez (El Salvador), operational activities segment; Vladimir Drobnjak (Croatia), integration segment; Ibrahim Dabbashi (Libya), humanitarian affairs segment; and Joon Oh (Republic of Korea), coordination and management of meetings.  At the outset of the meeting, Mr. Drobnjak was elected as Vice President.

Also today, by a draft decision contained in document E/2014/L.2, the Economic and Social Council appointed the Permanent Representative of Argentina as an additional member of the Ad Hoc Advisory Group on Haiti.
