Despite improvements, measures were needed to address shortcomings and increase the transparency and coherence of the Security Council’s reporting system and working methods, the General Assembly heard today as it met to consider the annual report of that body.

Despite setbacks and challenges ahead, Afghanistan was a country that had risen from the ashes of war to become a nation based on a democratic constitution and the will of the people, delegates heard today as the General Assembly unanimously adopted a draft resolution on the situation in that country.

In an organizational meeting this morning, the Disarmament Commission elected the Chair for its 2014 substantive session and reviewed the proposals contained in a resolution of the First Committee (Disarmament and International Security), including that it hold that session from 7 to 25 April.

Budget Committee Approves Draft Resolutions on Board of Auditors’ Reports, Internal Oversight Body’s Work

With the approval of two draft resolutions today, the Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) endorsed the Board of Auditors’ scrutiny of the Organization’s 2012 financial statements and backed the oversight work of the Office of Internal Oversight Services.

The General Assembly today voted to elect four States to the Economic and Social Council and one permanent judge to the International Tribunal for the Prosecution of Persons Responsible for Serious Violations of International Humanitarian Law Committed in the Territory of the Former Yugoslavia since 1991.

The Fourth Committee today concluded its work for the session with the approval of 11 draft resolutions and one draft decision, including, for the first time, a text on special political missions, bringing to 28 the total number of drafts it sent to the General Assembly for adoption.

The Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural) approved several draft resolutions today, including a text titled “Improving the coordination of efforts against trafficking in persons”.
