With billions of lives hanging in the balance, the next phase of development depended on the international community’s commitment to build on recent multilateral agreements and put the world on a sustainable path, stressed Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as the Economic and Social Council opened its inaugural forum on financing for development follow-up today.

The Commission on Population and Development adopted today a draft decision that would guide its future efforts through the post-2015 era, as the body continued a general debate on agenda items that included strengthening the demographic evidence base for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and streamlining its working methods.

Bold steps were needed to build capacities, introduce innovative technologies and reconfigure national statistics systems so developing countries could shape the policies required to trigger sustainable development gains, stressed speakers as the Commission on Population and Development continued its forty-ninth session today.

Launching a series of coordination and management meetings for its 2016 session, the Economic and Social Council today took stock of current strategies and identified new ways in which the United Nations and its partners could better coordinate efforts to support the world’s least developed countries and ensure no nation or person was left behind in global development.
