The Secretary-General today announced the appointment of Ibrahim Agboola Gambari of Nigeria as the new Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, succeeding Kieran Prendergast, effective 1 July 2005.  He will serve until the end of the Secretary-General’s term.

SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS JOËL W. ADECHI OF BENIN AS DEPUTY

SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE FOR ERITREA AND ETHIOPIA

The Secretary-General has decided to appoint Mr. Joël W. Adechi of Benin as his Deputy Special Representative for Eritrea and Ethiopia.

Ambassador Adechi has been serving as the Permanent Representative of Benin to the United Nations since September 1999, and has been his country’s representative to the Security Council.
