ICJ REJECTS BELGIAN ARREST WARRANT FOR FOREIGN MINISTER

OF DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

THE HAGUE, 14 February (ICJ) – Today, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), principal judicial organ of the United Nations, delivered its Judgment in the case concerning the arrest warrant of 11 April 2000 (Democratic Republic of the Congo v. Belgium).

SECRETARY-GENERAL CONCERNED BY UPSURGE OF FIGHTING IN LIBERIA;


APPEALS FOR HALT TO VIOLENCE, DIALOGUE


The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:


The Secretary-General is deeply concerned about the recent upsurge of fighting in Liberia.  It can only bring more suffering to innocent people who have yet to recover from the desolation caused by previous wars.

UN SECURITY COUNCIL TO VISIT ETHIOPIA AND ERITREA


All 15 member of the United Nations Security Council will travel to Ethiopia and Eritrea from 20-25 February to address the peace process between the two neighbouring countries and to discuss with the parties the further implementation of their agreements, signed in Algiers in 2000.


The delegation will be headed by Ambassador Ole Peter Kolby of Norway.
