The Secretary-General condemns the resumption of hostilities in Monrovia.  He calls on the parties concerned and, in particular, the Liberians United for Democracy and Reconciliation, to fully observe the ceasefire.

SECRETARY-GENERAL ‘STRONGLY CONDEMNS’ COUP D’ÉTAT IN SAO TOME AND PRINCIPE


The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:


The Secretary-General strongly condemns the coup d’état in Sao Tome and Principe and calls for the immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional order.  He also calls for the prompt release of government officials detained during the coup.

AID AGENCIES STRUGGLE TO MEET NEEDS IN LIBERIA

NEW YORK, 10 July (UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) -- Despite the relative calm stemming from a tenuous ceasefire in Monrovia, aid workers are struggling to meet the needs of Liberians.  Humanitarian agencies in Monrovia are constrained by an uncertain security environment coupled with shortages of both staff and supplies in the face of growing needs.
