FIFTH COMMITTEE CONTINUES DEBATE ON PEACEKEEPING SCALE OF ASSESSMENTS, AS FOUR STATES ANNOUNCE VOLUNTARY INCREASE IN SHARE OF COSTS

Four Member States -- Estonia, Hungary, Israel and the Philippines -- announced they would voluntarily increase their financial responsibility for peacekeeping missions, at a meeting of the Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) this morning. A fifth, Cyprus, made a similar announcement yesterday.

FIFTH COMMITTEE TAKES UP BOARD OF AUDITORS REPORT ON UN PEACEKEEPING 1998-1999

The United Nations peacekeeping bill was $837.8 million for the period 1 July 1998 to 30 June 1999, down from $879.3 million for the previous 12 months, the United Nations Board of Auditors told the Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary), as the Committee began its consideration of the Auditors’ report on peacekeeping operations.

FIFTH COMMITTEE DECISION PROJECTS MILLENNIUM SUMMIT COST AT $1.4 MILLION

The Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) this morning decided to inform the General Assembly that the draft resolution on the Millennium Summit it is considering (document A/54/L.83/Rev.1) could result in costs of some $1.4 million, while speakers expressed serious reservations about the statement of projected costs.
