Fifth Committee Takes Up First Performance Report for 2010-2011 Budget Cycle, Increased Regular Budget Funding for Sierra Leone Tribunal

The Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) today took up the Secretariat’s review of the first year of the 2010-2011 budget cycle, an annual exercise that re-evaluated budget requirements for the current two-year biennium downwards by $36.5 million, or less than 1 per cent, to $4.57 billion.

Budget Committee Takes Up Request for Assessment, Temporary Increase in Civilian Staff for United Nations Mission in Democratic Republic of Congo

The Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) today took up the Secretariat’s request for an assessment of $652.5 million to finance the ongoing operations of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). This assessment would make up the second portion of the $1.36 billion, approved by the General Assembly with its 24 June resolution 64/275, for the Mission’s operation from 1 July 2010 to the end of next June.

Fifth Committee Takes Up Budget Proposal for New United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women (UN Women)

The Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) today considered a Secretariat proposal to give the newly-minted UN Women the financial backing it needs to carry out the Organization’s efforts to eliminate discrimination against women and girls around the world.

Fifth Committee Begins Discussion of Proposed Budget for UN Mission in Haiti for Period 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011

Four days after Haiti held a first round of elections and nearly a year after a devastating earthquake hit the impoverished Caribbean nation, Secretariat officials proposed a budget of more than $850 million for the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) at today’s meeting of the Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary).

Barely seven weeks away from crucial referendums in Southern Sudan that will determine whether the country will split into two nations, the Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) today considered the Secretary-General’s request for $85.7 million for the United Nations Mission in the Sudan (UNMIS), as it provides assistance in creating a safe, free and secure voting process.

Rocked by Turmoil in World Financial Markets, United Nations Staff Pension Fund Bounces Back to Post 30 Per Cent Jump in Assets, Budget Committee Told

Even though it suffered its first actuarial setback in 14 years during the biennium that closed in December 2009, the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund bounced back from the turmoil in global financial markets to post a 32.2 per cent jump in assets to $38.3 billion by March 2010, Secretariat officials told the Fifth Committee today.

Budget Committee Approves Texts on Board of Auditors Reports, Pattern of Conferences, Begins Debate on New United Nations Administration of Justice System

With the adoption of two draft resolutions today, the Fifth Committee gave its approval to the Board of Auditor’s scrutiny of the Organization’s 2009 financial statements and laid down a blueprint of guidelines meant to improve the staging of conferences.

Budget Committee Recommends Appointments to Subsidiary Bodies

As it moved to fill upcoming vacancies on five bodies that support its work in overseeing the Organization’s human resources and budget, the Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) today recommended six people, whose names it will send to the General Assembly, to fill slots opening up in January on the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions.
