Annual Treaty Event to Promote Multilateral Treaty Framework, 24-27 September

In a continuing effort to promote participation in the multilateral treaty framework of the United Nations, the Headquarters in New York will host the annual treaty event from 24 to 27 September.  The event is held in conjunction with the general debate of the seventy-ninth session of the United Nations General Assembly.

During the treaty event, Member States are invited to sign or become a party to multilateral treaties deposited with the United Nations Secretary‑General by depositing instruments of ratification or accession.  These cover a wide range of areas of global concern, including human rights, disarmament, penal matters, law of the sea and the environment.

This year’s theme is “Strengthening the Multilateral Treaty Framework” and highlights, in particular, the Sustainable Development Goals, which aim to secure a future of prosperity and peace for people and planet, leaving no one behind.

“A strong multilateral treaty framework is essential to reaching our shared common objectives; indeed, international law underpins nearly 90 per cent of the Sustainable Development Goals,” said Secretary-General António Guterres in his invitation letter to Member States.

The Secretary-General added that one of the keys to the development and effective implementation of international law is the achievement of universal participation in the multilateral agreements for which he serves as depositary.

Held annually since 2000, the treaty event has since resulted in more than 2,000 related actions, including signatures, ratifications and accessions.
