Congratulating Bahamas’ Fifty Years in United Nations, Secretary-General Lauds Country’s Commitment to Solidarity, International Cooperation
Following is the text of UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ video message on the fiftieth anniversary of the Bahamas’ membership of the United Nations:
I send my heartfelt congratulations to the Government and people of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas on the fiftieth anniversary of your membership of the United Nations.
During those 50 years, the Bahamas has played a valuable role on the global stage. Your pledges of support for Haiti and your active role in the CARICOM [Caribbean Community] Eminent Persons Group are the most recent examples of your commitment to solidarity and international cooperation.
Small island developing States like the Bahamas are bearing the brunt of a climate crisis you did little to create. The United Nations stands with you for climate justice and global systems that deliver for all.
As the Bahamas works to achieve the 2030 Agenda [on Sustainable Development] and deliver the Sustainable Development Goals for its people, please rest assured of the continued and renewed support of the United Nations.
