Security Council Committee on Somalia Calls for Resources for Federal Government of Somalia on Small Arms and Light Weapons-Related Standard Operating Procedure

The Security Council Committee pursuant to resolution 751 (1992) concerning Somalia considered the recommendations contained in the comprehensive midterm update of the Panel of Experts on Somalia during its informal consultations on 3 June 2022.  One of those recommendations deals with the standard operating procedure on the management of recovered small arms and light weapons in Somalia, which has been agreed to by the Federal Government of Somalia and the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) on 29 June 2021.  In this connection, the Panel reported that this standard operating procedure has not yet been activated due to a lack of resources. Therefore, the Committee would like to urge the Federal Government of Somalia to outline the specific resources that are needed to activate the standard operating procedure and encourage Member States, regional organizations and other relevant institutions to support the provision of these resources to the Federal Government of Somalia with a view to activating the above-mentioned standard operating procedure.
