Secretary-General Appoints Garry Conille of Haiti United Nations Resident Coordinator in Jamaica

On 24 August, UN Secretary-General António Guterres appointed Garry Conille of Haiti as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Jamaica, with the host Government’s approval.

Mr. Conille brings more than 20 years of experience to his new position, most of them at the United Nations and international non-governmental organizations.

Prior to the appointment, Mr. Conille served as Resident Coordinator in Burundi, from 2017 to 2020, and before that, as Under-Secretary-General for Programmes and Operations with the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), from 2015 to 2017.  Mr. Conille was also Regional Director for the Africa Region at the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) from 2014 to 2015, having previously led the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Millennium Development Goals support unit, from 2008 to 2010.

Following Haiti’s 2010 earthquake, Mr. Conille served as Chief of Staff to the United Nations Special Envoy for Haiti, former United States President William J. Clinton, where he helped coordinate the country’s reconstruction efforts.

In 2011, Mr. Conille was nominated Prime Minister of Haiti, a position in which he served until 2012, when he became Senior Advisor to Liberia’s President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, in her role as Co-Chair of the United Nations High-Level Panel of Eminent Persons on the Post-2015 Development Agenda.

Mr. Conille began his career with the Organization in Haiti at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in 1999.

He holds a medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of the State University of Haiti and a Master of Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the United States.
