New Permanent Representative of Iran Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Iran to the United Nations, Majid Takht Ravanchi, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres today.

Until his latest appointment, Mr. Ravanchi served as Deputy Chief of Staff for Political Affairs in the Office of the President beginning in 2017.  He was previously Deputy Foreign Minister for European and American Affairs from 2013 to 2017.

Having served as Deputy Director of the Encyclopaedia of Contemporary Islam between 2009 and 2013, Mr. Ravanchi was an Adviser to the Foreign Minister from 2006 to 2009, Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein from 2002 until 2006, and Special Adviser to the Foreign Minister from 1998 to 2002.

Mr. Ravanchi previously served at the United Nations in New York from 1992 to 1998 with the rank of Ambassador, holding the positions of Deputy Permanent Representative (1996-1998) and Counsellor (1989-1992).

He was also Director of the United Nations Bureau (1988-1989) and Deputy Director of the International Organizations Bureau (1986-1988), both within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mr. Ravanchi holds a doctorate in political science from the University of Bern, Switzerland, and a master’s degree in international political economy and development from Fordham University in the United States.  He also earned master’s and bachelor’s degrees in civil engineering from the University of Kansas, also in the United States.

Born in 1958, he is married and has two children.
