Leadership, Greater Representation Needed to Ensure Support for Emerging Democracies, Secretary-General Tells Bali Forum
Following is the text of UN Secretary‑General António Guterres’ video message to the tenth Bali Democracy Forum, in Bali today:
Congratulations to all participating in the tenth Bali Democracy Forum. The United Nations welcomes every effort to share best practices and learn from each other through regional and international dialogue on democracy.
I have sometimes heard the view that democracy can put stability at risk, or run counter to efforts to prevent conflict. On the contrary, the principles of inclusion, openness and dialogue are key to lasting peace and stability, and to sustainable development.
Increasing representation, holding free and fair elections, strengthening civil society, empowering women, and upholding the rule of law all have a vital role to play. We need leadership to ensure support for emerging and developing democracies. I wish you fruitful discussions.
