Secretary‑General Appoints Luis Carrilho of Portugal United Nations Police Adviser in Department of Peacekeeping Operations

United Nations Secretary‑General António Guterres today announced the appointment of Luís Carrilho of Portugal as United Nations Police Adviser in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations.  He will succeed Stefan Feller of Germany to whom the Secretary‑General is grateful for his dedication, professionalism and leadership on United Nations policing issues.

Mr. Carrilho is Chief Superintendent with the Polícia de Segurança Pública in Portugal.  He served as United Nations Police Commissioner in three United Nations peacekeeping operations, notably in the Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) (2014-2016), the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) (2013-2014) and the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor‑Leste (UNMIT) (2009-2012).  He also served in the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) (2000-2001) and the United Nations Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNMIBH) (1996-1998).

Mr. Carrilho previously worked in the office of the President of the Republic of Portugal as the Head of Security and as the Commander of Close Protection of the Security Police in Lisbon.  He studied at the Instituto Superior de Ciências Policiais e Segurança Interna.

Born in 1966, he is married and has two children.
