Security Council Adopts Annual Report to General Assembly
The Security Council adopted its annual report to the General Assembly today for the period 1 August 2015 to 31 December 2016.
Yasuhisa Kawamura (Japan), noting that his country had coordinated the report’s introduction, said the 17-month coverage period was a transitional arrangement, and as stipulated by Presidential Note S/2015/944, all future reports would be from 1 January to 31 December. In summarizing the array of activity over 17 months, “we intended to be as objective as possible”, he said, while making utmost efforts to describe the context in which the Council’s actions had been taken, in order to enhance transparency and accountability.
The report was a product of a rigorous coordination process, he said, and formed an important part of the Council’s work required by Article 24 of the United Nations Charter. He expressed hope that it would be a useful reference for Member States, the Secretariat and all those serving the maintenance of international peace and security.
The Council unanimously adopted the report; the action would be reflected in a note by the President, to be issued as document S/2017/691.
The meeting began at 10: 05 a.m. and ended at 10:10 a.m.
