Mouayed Saleh of Iraq Chair of First Committee

The First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) elected Mouayed Saleh, Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations Office at Geneva, as Chair on 31 May 2017.  (See Press Release GA/11915.)

Before his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Saleh had been Iraq’s Ambassador to Australia since 2010.  He was concurrently non-resident Ambassador to Fiji in 2015 and New Zealand from 2011 to 2015.  He served as Director-General for Foreign Relations and Political Affairs in the office of the Prime Minister in 2009, and as an adviser on foreign relations from 2007 to 2009.

From 1989 to 2007, Mr. Saleh worked in the United States as an electronics engineer in the private sector.  He joined Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2009.

Mr. Saleh has a master’s degree in engineering from Arizona State University in the United States and a bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering from the State University of New York, Buffalo, United States.
