Economic and Social Council Elects Mohamed Khaled Khiari (Tunisia) Vice-President

The Economic and Social Council this morning elected Mohamed Khaled Khiari (Tunisia) Vice-President of the 54-member body.

Council President Martin Sajdik (Austria) congratulated Mr. Khiari, whose duties would include responsibility for the humanitarian segment, scheduled for June in Geneva.  On a personal note, he added that “now we have the best soccer player among ambassadors”.

Prior to the election, he thanked Mr. Khiari’s successor, Ibrahim Dabbashi (Libya), for his hard work and dedicated support, including for helping to break new ground in implementing the Council’s “new” cycle.  Libya’s Council membership expired in December 2014.

The Council’s 54 members for 2015 were Albania, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Benin, Bolivia, Botswana, Brazil, Burkina Faso, China, Colombia, Congo, Croatia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Mauritania, Mauritius, Nepal, Pakistan, Panama, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, San Marino, Serbia, South Africa, Sudan, Sweden, Switzerland, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States and Zimbabwe.

The Economic and Social Council will meet again at a time and date to be announced.
