Secretary-General ‘Deeply Disturbed’ by Inquiry Commission’s Findings

 

on Human Rights in Democratic People’s Republic of Korea

 

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General remains seriously concerned about human rights and the humanitarian situation in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).

As such, he is deeply disturbed by the findings of the commission of inquiry on human rights in the DPRK.

The Secretary-General notes the independent nature of the commission, which was established by the Human Rights Council.

He also notes that human rights are universal values.

The Secretary-General hopes the report will contribute to raising international awareness about grave violations of those values in the DPRK.

He encourages the DPRK authorities to engage with the international community to improve human rights and the living conditions of its people.  The Secretary-General reaffirms his strong commitment to help the DPRK towards that end.

The Secretary-General highly commends the work of the commission, which was led by Mr. Michael Kirby.  He is also grateful to those Member States, non-governmental organizations and individuals who offered their assistance to the commission of inquiry.
