Exhibition Commemorating Twentieth Anniversary of Rwanda Genocide

To Open at United Nations Headquarters, 16 April

The exhibition, “Kwibuka20: Memory, Unity & Renewal in Rwanda after the Genocide” will open with a formal ceremony on Wednesday, 16 April at 7:30 p.m. in the Dag Hammarskjöld Library Visitor Centre gallery (1B).

The exhibition is part of a series of remembrance activities at the United Nations that commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda.

Statements at the opening will be made by Eugène-Richard Gasana, Permanent Representative of Rwanda to the United Nations and Minister in Charge of Cooperation; and Rick Hirschhaut, Director of International Outreach for Kwibuka20.  The moderator will be Maher Nasser, Director of the Outreach Division of the United Nations Department of Public Information.

Through images, texts, and quotes from survivors and foreign witnesses, the exhibition recounts the genocide in Rwanda and the country’s remarkable journey to heal and rebuild after its most horrific year — 1994.  The exhibit features individuals who stayed to help at great personal peril, as well as survivors and perpetrators who have managed to come together, talk about the past and slowly rebuild their lives in a pacified country.

The exhibition is organized by Kwibuka, the Government of Rwanda, the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre and Aegis Trust.  It is endorsed by the Permanent Mission of Rwanda to the United Nations.
