United Nations Messenger of Peace, Senior Officials to Attend Headquarters

Launch of Book Aimed at Promoting Disarmament, 15 April

NEW YORK, 9 April (Office for Disarmament Affairs) — United Nations Messenger of Peace Michael Douglas will be coming to Headquarters for the launch of a book entitled Action for Disarmament: 10 Things You Can Do! on 15 April from 11 to 11:45 a.m. in the Dag Hammarskjöld Library Auditorium.

Written for high school and early-college students, Action for Disarmament: 10 Things You Can Do! draws the attention of young people around the world to the promotion of international peace and security through disarmament.  Expected at the launch to promote the book are Angela Kane, High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, and Ahmad Alhendawi, Envoy of the Secretary-General on Youth.

Action for Disarmament: 10 Things You Can Do! was written in the belief that young people in every country of the world have a critical role to play in raising awareness and developing new strategies to reduce the threats posed by weapons of mass destruction as well as small arms and light weapons.  The book helps teenagers and young adults make the public aware why disarmament is so important.  In 10 practical steps, it will help young people mobilize, act and promote the disarmament ideals of the United Nations in their schools, communities and beyond.

The launch ceremony will include: brief statements by the Messenger of Peace and senior United Nations officials; a rap performance by high school students; an interactive quiz on disarmament and non-proliferation, with prizes and souvenir T-shirts; and the “Bee Bee Demonstration” by world peace educator Kathleen Sullivan, Ph.D. — one of the book’s primary authors — which uses sound to heighten the power of imagination in order to understand the enormous destructive power of the nuclear weapons currently in existence.

The University of Tokyo in Japan and the Hope to the Future Foundation in the Republic of Korea have agreed to translate the book into Japanese and Korean respectively.
