Security Council Press Statement on Terrorist Attacks in Somalia

The following Security Council press statement was issued today by Council President Eugène-Richard Gasana (Rwanda):

The members of the Security Council condemn in the strongest possible terms yesterday’s terrorist attacks in Mogadishu, for which Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility, and which has caused numerous deaths and injuries.  The members of the Security Council extend their condolences to the victims and their families, the people and the Government of Somalia as well as the Government of the Republic of Turkey.

As Somalia continues to progress towards greater peace and stability, it is deplorable that ordinary Somalis, and members of the international community supporting that progress, have been targeted by those who seek to prevent peace.

The members of the Security Council reaffirm that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed.

The members of the Security Council reiterate their determination to combat all forms of terrorism, in accordance with its responsibilities under the Charter of the United Nations.

The members of the Security Council remind States that they must ensure that measures taken to combat terrorism comply with all their obligations under international law, in particular international human rights, refugee and humanitarian law.

The members of the Security Council underline their willingness to take action against those whose behaviour threatens the peace, stability, or security of Somalia.  The members of the Security Council reaffirm their resolve to support the peace and reconciliation process in Somalia, including through the imminent deployment of a new United Nations special political mission.
